Service Dog Education Program

Community Education

Paws For Empowerment offers community awareness through educational presentations and live demonstrations for dog parents and would be dog parents throughout the year in local libraries, schools, pet stores and community service organizations.  Prospective audiences range from individuals with disabilities, to school aged children, to senior citizens groups, to state and federal employees, to civic associations, to health care practitioners, corporations and more. The workshops feature live demonstrations of service dog skills, tours of PFE’s facility, instructional presentations, review of the ADA guidelines, obedience training demonstration, exhibits and information tables. Our primary goal is to create awareness and to help educate the general public about the role service dogs play in the lives of persons with disabilities and the support they need in gaining independence.

Presentations can include any of the following formats, based on audience:

  • A brief video about Paw For Empowerment Team and accomplishments
  • Demonstrations of Service Dog skills by a dog in-training
  • Interactive demonstrations (audience/dog)
  • Pet safety and etiquette
  • Overview of Functions of  a Service Dog
  • Demonstration of wheelchair etiquette
  • Audience practice with wheelchair – maneuvering self and/or pushing chair
  • Handouts appropriate to age level of audience
